During one of my speaking engagements, my flight arrangements required me to do a connecting flight in the Carolinas. It was an extremely busy airport and there was not much time to make the plane. Seeing that I had a visual impairment, the stewardess suggested we get assistance to the gate for our next flight. I loved that our help came in the form of a golf cart. I had always wondered who was the V.I.P. status that secured these reserved seats as we literally flew from one gate to another. Our chauffeur knew that time was of the essence.
I sat in the front with my driver, Gary. He was respectful, yet authoritative, as he maneuvered his way through the crowded corridors while I looked on. Never trying to miss the moments, I struck up a conversation with my driver. After asking his name, I asked, “Are you retired from the military?” He seemed surprised that I knew his past as he said, “Well, as a matter of fact I am.” We continued our challenging course together as I asked about when he served and in what branch of the military. He answered but all of his attention became extremely focused on the time passing and the slow moving pace of the people filling the halls of the airport.
Finally, we arrived at our gate just in the nick of time. Tony quickly worked to get our carry-ons in order and tip our server. As Tony took my arm, I stopped and said, “Wait! I must do something first.” I looked toward our airport chauffeur and called, “Gary!” He seemed surprised again and stood erect looking my direction. I said, “Thank you for serving our nation.” To which he warmly said “Thank you.” Time seemed to hold still in that sweet moment as it seemed few had ever thanked him. He knew I was in a hurry but stopped to acknowledge him with honor. I saluted him as I ran to find my seat on the plane. In the middle of all the busyness and planned agenda I found time to sincerely thank a stranger for his life and giving it willingly for our nation. Unsung heroes just doing their job, fulfilling their commitment to fight for the freedom we enjoy, must never be overlooked.
