We have a tradition in our family during the year our children turn twelve. We call it the year of the blessing. It is a precursor before the infamous “teen” years. Using the word teenager is a relatively new word in our culture. The word “teen” was first used in 1921 and the term “teenager” was coined in 1941. No matter the terminology, the true picture is that our children begin to cross a bridge from childhood to adulthood. This interesting journey often takes  twists and turns with some wise navigation on the parts of parents and children. Nonetheless, there is a specific demarcation from what once was childish that now advances to the development of maturity and responsibility, hopefully. Preparing for adulthood can take a lifetime for some on this strategic bridge. Chronological age can mean little when it comes to maturity. No matter the course of travel, it can be challenging as well as exciting, as our legacy prepares to impact their generation and lead.

During the twelfth year of our child’s life, we spend that year having good friends, family, mentors and special leaders we are connected with speak the blessing over our children. It aids in establishing purpose in their life, encouragement and easing into what some call the “troubled” years – teenagers. Six years ago, Lydia took her turn. She is our fourth born daughter. A dear friend and well-known spiritual leader, from the nation of Zimbabwe was in Dallas, the day of Lydia’s birthday. We made arrangements to meet him before he was to speak at a local church in the DFW area. He was excited to be one who would speak the blessing over our daughter of destiny. He said that his world counsel was also in town and asked if they could join in the prayer of blessing. I knew that this was not only a rare event but strategic one since I have told Lydia since a young girl that she would rock nations.

Lydia stood in the middle of a group of incredible leaders who represented four continents. Bishop Tudor Bismark began to pray as I stood beyond the circle of mighty men with tears falling from my cheeks. I knew Lydia’s blessing would take her around the globe with purpose and God would open doors in time.

Lydia is now 18 and has already traveled to minister in six nations. She has just been accepted to attend a program in Germany for the year with “Youth with a Mission” (YWAM). After three months of intensive leadership training, she will be assigned to another nation where she will go to serve.  Our youngest daughter has been a blessing to us and now leaves to bless the nations. Godspeed, dear Lydia. Serve well. His blessing is upon you for the nations.
