There are a couple whom I have known all my life—literally…my parents! Chet and Janet Moyers are one of the most hospitable, friendly, authentic, loving people I have ever known. They love God and His Word, and their faith is core to all they do. Watching their lives have inspired many to follow in their tracks. They genuinely love at all times and think the best of others, looking for ways to serve.
My parents are both from Missouri. They married 57 years ago. May is their anniversary, but the special day they celebrate each year is their engagement—Groundhog Day, Feb. 2! Dad is quick to let others know that there is rarely a crowd at any restaurant for a nice romantic night on the town on that date. He also says that he and Mom have only had one argument their entire married life. He waits for the perfect timing and then adds, “Yes! It began 57 years ago.”
My parents have always worked hard together and side by side. My dad was raised in the foot hills of the Ozarks, four miles from the Cherokee Pass, part of the Trail of Tears. Raised on a farm, he graduated from high school the same day he turned 17; joined the Navy four months later; and married Mom after his discharge. His book of memories, titled “-Memoirs- My Testimony of God’s Faithfulness,” was his first book, but others have followed. His life adventure, accomplishments and insights have brought him to the sunset years and now a prolific writer. His newest release, “Blessed! Its A God Thing,” helps one see the rainbow at the end of each day. He currently is finishing his book on leadership. Somewhere soon there has to be a book of his South Missouri stories and humor.
My mom is completing her account of her life but says it will not be a book. To all of the family, it will be a legacy classic. She was raised in North Central Missouri, and my parents met at a youth church camp. She was the shy one; the valedictorian of her class; and from a railroad family. We fondly call her the “Comma Queen” since she has done the first edit of any major piece of writing for all of us. Mom’s big laugh and accepting ways makes her anyone’s best audience—especially if you have quick Missouri humor. She has been my dad’s best fan and audience. Her heart is that of a server and my dad’s an encourager. What an incredible team. Only eternity will show the major impact of their lives together and fruitful marriage
Chet and Janet Moyers were given the challenge of living through some hardships. One was mom’s car-jacking five years ago and more recently dad’s emergency quadruple heart surgery with only 15% of his heart working. One major challenge was probably raising me, but I am ever so grateful they did and for the rich deposits they made in my life. They have helped form me into the woman I am today, and I still treasure each daily phone call to them at their youthful age of 78.
Happy Ground Hog’s Day, Mom and Dad. May you see His shadow that you have lived under more clearly this year. “He who dwells under the shadow of the Almighty” is a portrait of your successful life beyond measure. You definitely have lived beyond the movie “Groundhog Day” where each day is like the other. No! Your days are diverse and filled with good, and you still are serving others with joy and love.
May He surprise you this 2013 as best friends embracing each day together and living in peace. Thanks for having me!
