What defines a great leader? When I think of great British leaders, two come to mind readily—Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. Legends, courageous, visionaries and made of steel. They both remained solid and unbending yet molded history and policy. However, there is only one “Iron Lady”—Margaret Thatcher.
Margaret Thatcher was the first and only female Prime Minister of Great Britain. She served three consecutive terms. She is said to have reshaped almost every aspect of British politics, reviving the economy, reforming outdated institutions, and reinvigorating the nation’s foreign policy. She and Ronald Regan were good friends who promoted conservative thought. Their impact was undeniable. I like two descriptions of this famous leader – “striking energy and determination.”
Margaret Thatcher was one of the world’s most influential and driven political leaders of the 20th century. She was the first and only female Prime Minister of Britain. She won three General Elections. She was the first woman to lead a major Western democracy and served as the Prime Minister for more than eleven years. She was outspoken, controversial and a dynamic leader. Some praise her work, while others call her names and hold her in disdain.
What makes a great leader? Standing your ground and fighting for what is right, no matter the opposition. Ridicule and names did not stop this leader, who happened to be a woman. Her goal was not to promote a feminist movement, but lead. Her efforts were about something greater than her own world, but instead, making Great Britain strong, in spite of their previously weakened economy and shifting foreign policy. Through Margaret Thatcher Great Britain became leaders in democracy. Changes made will be discussed in the days ahead, and the impact of her leadership will be studied by students of history for generations to come. Thank you, Margaret, for blazing a trail for leaders of both genders to stand firm on what you believe and work with diligence to impact your generation.
Personally, when I reflect on the high assignment and title given to a woman, I am encouraged to serve a purpose bigger than myself and my own agenda. What makes a great leader? Willingness, steadfastness, diligence and focus. All of us can learn from Prime Minister Thatcher, no matter the obstacles and challenges confronting us. We work for a better day—strong and firm as steel and a force to strengthen the foundation of our lives.
